Consumer Directed Services is the newest concept in service delivery for people enrolled in the Home and Community-based Services (HCS) and Texas Home Living (TxHmL) programs. 

What is CDS?
Consumer Directed Services allows DADS consumers to hire and manage the persons who deliver personal assistance and respite services within their current home and community-based program.

The major advantage to CDS is to give the HCS recipient the ability to hire and fire their own direct support staff. Under the HCS Medicaid waiver, a person can have CDS for two service catagories: supported home living and respite.

Supported Home Living helps persons living in ther own or their families' homes learn, retain or improve skills related to activities of daily living including personal grooming and cleanliness, bed making and household chores, opreparing and eating food and social and adaptive skills.

Respite provides temporary relief for unpaid primary caregivers or provides care when the caregiver is absent. Respite services are provided either in or out of the home.
