The Self-Determination for Texas project promotes the principles of self-determination for people with disabilities and those who support them.
Local agencies and the national Center for Self-Determination have coordinated to host trainings in eight Texas regions, with more to come. Various organizations, agencies, providers, family and friends have participated in these trainings across the state. Training facilitators are from Texas and across the nation.
Through regional trainings in the Rio Grande Valley, Corpus Christi, the Gulf Coast region, Longview, Plano, Lubbock, Fort Worth and El Paso, the project has educated hundreds of Texans from diverse cultures and roles. The “Focus Person” experience is a targeted interaction with a local volunteer to demonstrate the use of a self-determination plan connected to an individual budget.
In addition to our basic self-determination trainings, specialized trainings have included:
Self-Determination and Employment
Community Building
Building Circles of Support
Local Planning Workgroup on Self-Determination
Focus Person Follow-Up
The project has also offered half-day sessions specifically designed for self-determination within organizations to assist systems with incorporating this concept into service provision.
The project collects stories, which may be found at “Perspectives” at www.selfdetermined.org. This website also furnishes many resource materials and training announcements.
Imagine Enterprises, in collaboration with the Center for Self-Determination, works with organizations and people committed to the values of self-determination. The Texas Council for Developmental Disabilities funds the project. |
